Selecting A Low Cost 120V Welder For Home Use

Most homeowners have certain standard tools for repair of household items, and a welder just wouldn't be on that list of what is "typical". Considering my experiences, I think a lot of homeowners should re-think that standard. Several years ago I bought a small 120 volt arc welder to fabricate parts for my 1936 Chevy Pick up. In spite of the fact that the cost was fairly affordable when I bought this welder to work on my hot rod pick up, I still wondered whether it would really be worth the expense. I had never owned or used a welder and I just didn't know much about such things. Boy was I surprised - What a great idea it turned out to be!

Heavy Duty Drill

Sure, it did just what I expected in fabricating parts for my truck, but it has also helped me fix and repair dozens of things around the house. As an example, my wife had an old coat rack that was made of wood and cast iron - it originally belonged to her great grandmother, but the iron part had cracked and broken. I took it to a guy to fix it, and he wanted 0. I thought it was crazy to spend that kind of money, so I bought about worth arc welding rod specially made for cast iron, a can of flat black paint and fixed it myself. A few weeks later the handle on my workshop vise broke - I would have had to throw it away, but with a bit of welding, and its as good as new. From my camp trailer, to hand tools, broken stuff for the family and friends - I've used my welder a hundred times.

Heavy Duty Drill

That's why I recommend purchasing one so freely. I've easily saved enough money to pay for the cost of my welder many times over. So many things around the house that I would have had to just throw away are practically good as new. Home workshop, arts and crafts, automotive repairs - all are applications that I've used home welder to work on. It just opened a whole new world of potential projects I could complete. I admit I'm kind of a tool junkie, but a welder is just something that most homeowners wouldn't think of.

Different types of welding equipment are available, some are powered by 220V wall power, some welders have their own generator to create their power. Different technologies include Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welders which feed a continuous wire into the welder, and use a flow of argon gas to keep the metal from burning or oxidizing too quickly. TIG welders (Tungsten Inert Gas) use a non consumable tungsten electrode and a bare uncoated hand held welding rod.

The type of welder I recommend for home use is a simple stick electrode - arc welding set up, which uses a rod covered in a flux to weld and can be plugged right into a standard wall outlet. During welding with this type of equipment, the vaporizing flux protects the metal. The arc is very high temperature and the metal virtually sprays off the end of the rod. The flux on the rod which does not vaporize, fuses into a molten glass which protects the metal from oxidation while it is cooling.

For the average home owner, a simple 120V unit, is probably best. No special modification to provide 220 V power is necessary, and the price is quite reasonable (I paid about 0 for mine).. The 120V unit is only good to weld up to about 3/16 inch steel. If you are doing heavy duty welding and heavy fabrication, you need a larger unit. However for 99% of the typical homeowner applications, I find the 120V unit is really sufficient. There are low cost MIG units that can run on 115V home power available for slightly more than the stick type arc welding units, but with MIG you also need a cylinder of compressed Argon to provide the inert gas, and that adds to the price a bit.

Welding supplies are available locally in most areas. These are the shops where you can purchase different types of welding rod (you can only use small diameter rod with a 120V unit). Different types of rods (or wire for MIG type units) are used for welding on different types of steel or iron. I also bought an upgraded welding mask at my local welding supply shop.

Anyway, I consider my little home arc welder one of the best purchases that I have ever made and I heartily recommend it to other homeowners. I'm not a welding equipment dealer, but I like my tools and this has been a good one to own, not to mention that the cost was very affordable. If you want to consider fabricating home metal craft projects, doing home and auto repairs, metal arts and other similar types of projects, I really think that it is a very worthwhile purchase. I know I wouldn't be without one.

Wheat Grinders - Types, Prices, Usage, Recommendations

If you are anything like me, the idea of buying, let alone actually USING a wheat grinder can be pretty intimidating. I am determined to accumulate a healthy-sized food storage and wheat is going to play a big role in that. I am also a fan of the mantra "store what you eat and eat what you store". Thus it quickly became apparent to me that I needed to do some heavy duty research in order to uncover all the mysteries surrounding "wheat grinders" or "grain mills" as they are officially called. With the help of internet research, some hands on research at several neighbors' houses, and multiple failed attempts in the kitchen, I have come up with a pretty good summary of what you need to know.

Heavy Duty Drill

Types of Wheat Grinders

Heavy Duty Drill

Manual Wheat Grinders

Pros

Inexpensive Can be used with no power source Small to store
Cons

SLOW to grind (mine took 6 minutes to grind one cup of flour) Except for the very high-end models, you cannot grind a fine flour Inconvenient (messy and hard to fit a large bowl underneath)
KitchenAid Attachments

Pros

Less expensive than an electric grinder Small to store Convenient to use and then mix bread in the same machine
Cons

I have heard from multiple sources that these units will BREAK your KitchenAid mixer Not as fast at grinding as electric grinders
Electric Wheat Grinders

Pros

Grinds very fast Useful for many types of grains, beans, nuts, etc. Easy to select how coarse or fine to grind, and has a large range
Cons

Fairly expensive, even for the lower-end models Must have a generator or battery pack to use with no electricity (unless you buy a high end model that comes with a manual crank) A large appliance to store in your kitchen
Prices of Wheat Grinders

Manual Wheat Grinders

Low: -30 models will not grind flour, only coarse corn meal, etc. Not very useful. Medium: -5 is a good price range. Back to Basics Grain Mill is . It can grind fine enough for bread flour but not for very fine cake flour. Wonder Junior is higher-priced at 9 but it can grind into cake flour. High: Up to 0 for the Country Living Grain Mill. It is quicker than other manual grinders and is able to grind a fine cake flour.
KitchenAid Attachments

0-120, some may be used on any stand mixer.
Electric Wheat Grinders

Low: Under 0 for grinders such as the Blendtec Grain Mill. Its drawbacks are it is very noisy and cannot do very coarse grinds. Medium: 0-0 can get you a great grinder. The two most popular electric grinders are the WonderMill and the NutriMill. In my tests I found the WonderMill to be faster, quieter, cleaner, and easier to store. And priced at 9 it is even cheaper than the NutriMill which is 9. High: Over 0 is an unnecessary amount to spend in my opinion. There are heavy duty models out there but you can get the job done with the mid-range models.
How To Use Wheat Grinders

Manual Wheat Grinders

Attach wheat grinder to your counter top Place a bowl underneath Pour the wheat in the funnel Turn the crank (for a LONG time) Wheat will filter into the bowl below
Electric Wheat Grinders

Select how fine or coarse you want to grind Turn on the machine Pour the wheat in the top Wait for it to grind into flour (super fast) Turn off the machine and pull out your canister of wheat
How To Use Fresh Ground Whole Wheat

Whole wheat bread can be delicious! I have gone through a lot of recipes trying to find the perfect balance of flavor, nutrition, texture, etc. for my wheat bread. Experiment with different recipes and types of wheat until you find what your family prefers. We liked using hard white wheat in a recipe that included gluten and oatmeal. Pancakes even your kids will love! I took an IHOP corn cakes recipe and simply swapped all-purpose flour for whole wheat flour and it was amazing. My kids ate 3 each at one meal. They are delicious drizzled with honey over top. Whole wheat oatmeal cookies you can't resist. I haven't tried any of these recipes yet but several of my friends said they prefer whole wheat cookies to regular cookies. Who wouldn't want an excuse to make cookies, hey it's rotating your food storage. Much much more. I grind up a large Tupperware full of hard white wheat flour and store it in my freezer (it retains the nutrients that way). Whenever I do any baking I replace half or all of the flour called for with my whole wheat flour. If it is as good or better I add that recipe to my food storage recipe binder. It's a great way to experiment until you find what works for you.
My Recommendations

Emergency-Only Usage

If you are planning to use your food storage and wheat grinder only if an emergency situation arises, it is not worth the expense and hassle of buying and storing an electric grinder. At a minimum you should get the Back to Basics Grain Mill but I would highly recommend splurging for the Wonder Junior.
Every-Day Usage

If you plan to "store what you eat and eat what you store" I highly recommend the WonderMill Grain Mill electric grinder. If you are not planning to find an alternative power source for an emergency situation, then eventually pick up a Back to Basics Grain Mill as well. The price of these two combined are still cheaper than high-end electric grinders that have a manual crank option, and the functionality of the WonderMill is better for frequent usage.

John Deere Engine Serial Numbers Explained

John Deere, like other engine manufacturers, uses its unique terminology and arrangements, to mark its products, and to assign part numbers. Understanding this marking categorization and system is crucial to part number identification, which is then used to select rebuild kits, components, and maintenance parts.

Heavy Duty Drill

A typical engine serial number looks like TO4045T123456. To better understand this number, it will be split into several parts. The first segment is the two initial letters "TO." These two initial letters indicates two things:- one, which country was it manufactured in, and secondly, if it is Powertech or non-Powertech.

Heavy Duty Drill

All John Deere engines manufactured in Dubuque, Iowa, USA, are preceded by the letters "TO," all engines preceded by "CD" are manufactured in Saran, a factory located in the Loiret area of France, and all engines manufactured in Torreon, Mexico, are preceded by the letters "PE."

The next set of numbers in the John Deere engine serial number are four (4) or (5) numbers and letters. In our example, this refers to "4045T." This can be further sub-divided into the "4045" and the "T". The 4045 indicated that this is 4045 model. The initial "4" indicates that its build with four (4) cylinders. The "T' that's comes after the engine model number tells that the engine has a turbocharger attached onto it, and thus this is a turbocharged engine. This factor is significant as turbocharged engines are designed differently from non-turbocharged engines. Most importantly, parts may not be interchanged between these two kinds of engines.

The last set of six (6) numbers is the sequential number of the engines as it comes off the assembly line. If this number is 123456, then the next serial number of the next engine on the same assembly line will be 123457. This will continue until John Deere decides its time to upgrade or to build another model.

There are many variations of the above serial number. The model 4045T can be marked 4045D. Here the "D" symbolizes that the engine is a diesel engine (some early John Deere's were manufactured to operate on gas), and that's it's naturally aspirated, i.e., it's not turbocharged. Thus, this serial number could have been TO4045D123456 and this would have been totally different from the TO4045T123456.

The 4045 in serial numbers can also be 3152, 3164, 3179, 3029, 4202, 4219, 4239, 4039, 4276, 6303, 6329, 6059, 6414, 6068, 6414, 4270, 6404, 6466, or 6076. They can be followed by a "D", a "T" or a "H."

The issue of how to identify which engines are PowerTech and which are not non-PowerTech often arises. This can be solved by further dissecting the John Deere serial number.

For the engines made in Dubuque, Iowa, USA,(TO Engines) all engines with a sequence number more than 700,000 are all Powertech engines.

For the engines made in Sarran, France,(CD engines) all engines with sequence serial number more than 500,000 are all Powertech engines.

On the contrary, however,, all John Deere engines made in Torreon, Mexico, (PE engines) are PowerTech engines. This sequence serial number began with one thousand (1000). Thus, all PE PowerTech engines will have a sequence serial number of one thousand (1000) and up.

Christmas Sales Neiko Heavy-Duty 3/8" Conversion Chuck for Impact Drivers - Quick Change Shank - 1/2" Adapter for Impact Wrench Overview

Cordless impact drivers are one of the most popular power tools on the market today with small form-factor, excellent battery life and amazing power. Their main drawback is the quick-change receiver accepts only hex-shank accessories - unless you've got this conversion chuck. The quick-change hex shank locks securely into the driver's receiver and works like a regular drill, so you can use round-shaft drill, carving, grinding and polishing bits. And - unlike some conversion chucks - the chuck body is locked to the shaft so you'll able turn bits both right- and left-handed without causing jaws to loosen. As an added bonus, the unique adapter includes lets you attach the chuck to impact wrenches, ratchet handles or breaker bars with 1/2" square anvil. And used by itself, the adapter holds any 1/4" hex-shank bit; made of Chrome-Vanadium steel alloy for superior strength. Lastly, the quick-change shank can be removed from the chuck and the chuck attached directly to most 3/8" power cordless drill spindles with left-hand threaded screw. Dimensions: chuck diameter 1-5/16", length with quick-change shank 3-1/4" (1-15/16" without) total weight 6.2 oz. NOT FOR USE WITH PNEUMATIC TOOLS. Made in Taiwan.

How To Build A Patio Cover

If willing to experiment and build a Patio Cover, hammer out questions as to why you need a Patio Cover, for what purpose, whether it would be painted or made with wood, prefabricated aluminum or PVC, and if permission is required from state or city authorities. Remember that a patio is an extension of the house, generally not more than 12 feet and single-storied. The patio can be fully covered or have no cover. No special skills are required for building a Patio Cover except co-coordinating your patience, dimension of area, number of wood or aluminum panels and material required.

Heavy Duty Drill

Begin with the necessary spade work according to weather conditions, area and usage of patio. The next step is selecting material from a comprehensive range, including polycarb panels for high summer or winter temperatures, vinyl opaque all weather conditions, vinyl translucent and clear panels suitable for use in milder weather conditions, aluminum pan roof that is cool, durable and requiring little maintenance, or insulated foam panels providing insulation for a strong low-maintenance roof. The panels should fit and install easily, and offer design flexibility. Check if the gutter system is accessible for cleaning whether it is w-pan gutter, roll form gutter or extruded gutter and valance.

Heavy Duty Drill

For that professional Patio Cover you would need appropriate tools; you can order a complete tool kit or purchase one. The tools required would be a 3/8"" drill bit, hack saw or electric jig saw with fine-toothed blade for metal, a caulking gun, measuring tape, screwdriver, hammer, metal snips, socket and shank, crescent wrench, level, carpenter's square, ladders, heavy duty pencils, masonry and nuts and bolts. If the patio is attached to the house then the existing support system will help cover to fit easily. For a free-standing patio the cover will have to be fitted on all four sides, depending on shape. The building instructions will guide you step by step.

Bathtub Lift Chair Makes Independent Living Possible For Seniors

Until recently, only a few people know that there is such a thing as bathtub lift chair. Bath lifts are designed to make bathing easier, and for old people, to make it possible to bathe independently.

Heavy Duty Drill

It can be very tough for the elderly to cleanse in the bathtub. They have to walk on the slippery bathroom floors, and then find a way to enter the high-edged tub, and then lower themselves on the bathtub floor. For old people, this can easily turn into a very stressful experience that they instead take showers than enjoy a warm and relaxing cleansing ritual. However, taking a shower requires them to stand for a long time, making them prone to accidents like slipping or falling. To avoid this, family members hire someone to help the elders when bathing.

Heavy Duty Drill

Old people do not have to go through these traumatic and embarrassing experiences. Bathtub lift chairs allow seniors to live independently. These specially designed seats safely raise and lower a person into a bathtub. Lift chairs utilize a rechargeable battery to lift and lower the user. Intelligently made, these chairs will not lower the seat unless there is enough power to lift it again. The units are secured to the bathroom floor by strong suction cups and do not require any drilling on the floor.

Plenty of bath seats are available depending on the elder's needs, taste, and budget. For a relaxing bath, you can look at the Reclining Bathtub Lift Chair by Neptune. Of course, nobody would want to sit up straight while taking a bath. Even persons without special needs want to comfortably sit and lay one's back while cleansing.

Even if the seat is reclined, Neptune's lift chair will still fit in your tub. Its design allows more legroom for the user while also allowing the chair to recline. The suction caps on the chair's feet are wider than standard models, allowing for better fit. For bathtubs with anti-slip surface, you can place its feet further back so they will not come into contact with that area. It also has a firm grip that effectively supports an old person when he or she gets out of the seat.

Are you worried that it will not fit to your bathtub? This reclining lift chair is narrowly designed so that it will fit to a wide variety of tub. As with most models, Neptune Reclining Bath Lift folds in two and takes up only a small space in the closet. It is lightweight and portable you can literally carry it with you, whether you are traveling or simply transferring it from one room to another.

Since most bathtub lift chairs use rechargeable batteries, you can purchase extra battery packs to make sure that the device is always ready to use.

If your loved one is having a tough time entering and exiting the bathtub, a bathtub lift chair is probably a good investment that you may want to consider. It is an economical choice that provides privacy and independence for an old person using the bathroom.

Drilling Ceramic Tiles: How To Drill Holes In Ceramic Tile

Drilling holes in ceramic tiles isn't as difficult as it might seem

Heavy Duty Drill

Are you afraid of drilling through ceramic wall tile in case you crack or scratch the tile? I know that I was the first time that I did it. The thought of having to replace a perfectly good tile because I had destroyed it with my drill was just a little daunting. Don't worry though, it isn't nearly as difficult as it looks and if you follow a few simple rules your ceramic tile drilling should turn out just fine.

Heavy Duty Drill

Use the correct type of drill bit

You need to use a carbide tipped drill bit for drilling into ceramics. The more common twist-drill bits that you might use for drilling into metal are not suitable because they will not be able to cut through the hard ceramic glaze on the tile. You may find that your DIY store has drill bits specialy marked for the purpose of drilling through ceramic tile.

Prevent the drill bit from slipping or skating on the ceramic surface

Take 2 pieces of masking tape and stick them on the ceramic tile in an 'X' pattern so that the hole will be in the center of the cross. This will help to stop the drill bit from slipping off target when drilling. Use a variable speed drill and start very slowly until the surface glaze has been penetrated to give the drill bit a guide. I like to drill very slowly all the way through to be on the safe side.

Change the drill bit when you are through the ceramic tile

When you feel the drill bit reaching the back of the tile be careful to slow down the drilling to ensure a clean exit at the back of the tile. When you are all the way through change the drill bit for one more suitable to drilling through the material that the ceramic tile is mounted on. You most likely will need either a wood drill or a masonry drill bit at this point.

Drilling a pilot hole

Unless I'm drilling a large hole in ceramic tile I never drill a pilot hole first but I do know that some people advise that you do. I prefer to be very careful and start drilling very slowly to make sure that I'm on target and the bit doesn't slip. I don't have to buy 2 ceramic tile drill bits that way.

Choosing a drill

When drilling ceramic tiles make sure that you use a power drill that has a variable speed control, which can be set to rotate very slowly. Portable battery operated power drills can be very good for this purpose.
